Understanding Tax Credits: What You Can Claim

Updated: May 28

Introduction

Tax credits can significantly reduce the amount of tax you owe, putting more money back in your pocket. Understanding which credits you're eligible for is crucial for maximizing your refund. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the most common tax credits you can claim as a Canadian taxpayer.

What Are Tax Credits?

Definition:

Tax credits are amounts that can be deducted directly from the taxes you owe. Unlike deductions, which reduce your taxable income, credits reduce the actual amount of tax payable.

Types:

There are two main types of tax credits: non-refundable and refundable. Non-refundable credits reduce your tax liability to zero but won’t provide a refund if they exceed the amount you owe. Refundable credits, on the other hand, can result in a refund even if you don’t owe any taxes.

Common Non-Refundable Tax Credits

Basic Personal Amount:

Every taxpayer can claim the basic personal amount, which provides a significant reduction in taxes owed. For the 2023 tax year, the amount is $15,000.

Canada Employment Amount:

If you’re employed, you can claim the Canada employment amount to help cover work-related expenses. The maximum claim for 2023 is $1,287.

Public Transit Tax Credit:

Although this credit was eliminated for most public transit usage, certain jurisdictions may offer provincial credits. Check your local guidelines to see if you qualify.

Common Refundable Tax Credits

GST/HST Credit:

Low-income individuals and families may qualify for the GST/HST credit, which helps offset the cost of the Goods and Services Tax or Harmonized Sales Tax. This credit is issued quarterly and is based on your income and family size.

Canada Child Benefit (CCB):

Families with children under 18 can receive the CCB, a tax-free monthly payment. The amount depends on your family income and the number of children.

Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB):

Now known as the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB), this refundable tax credit provides support to low-income individuals and families who are working. The CWB consists of a basic amount and a disability supplement.

Specific Tax Credits for Education and Training

Tuition Tax Credit:

If you’re a student enrolled in post-secondary education, you can claim the tuition tax credit. This non-refundable credit helps reduce the amount of tax you owe based on the tuition fees you’ve paid.

Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP):

While not a direct tax credit, the LLP allows you to withdraw amounts from your RRSP to finance full-time training or education for yourself or your spouse/common-law partner. The withdrawn amount is repayable over a period of up to 10 years.

Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit:

Employers who hire apprentices in certain trades can claim this refundable tax credit. If you’re an apprentice, ensure your employer is aware of this incentive, as it can help support your employment.

Tax Credits for Health and Wellness

Medical Expense Tax Credit:

You can claim a credit for eligible medical expenses that exceed a certain threshold relative to your income. This includes expenses such as prescription medications, medical devices, and certain types of therapy.

Disability Tax Credit (DTC):

Individuals with severe and prolonged physical or mental impairments can claim the DTC. If eligible, you may also transfer the credit to a supporting family member.

Home Accessibility Tax Credit:

If you’ve made renovations to your home to improve accessibility for a disabled individual, you may be able to claim this non-refundable credit. The maximum claim is $10,000 per year.
